At New Minas Dental Centre, we offer oral hygiene services and gum therapy to help our patients maintain oral health.
If you’re flossing every day, and making sure you brush your teeth at least two times a day, you’re doing a great job of maintaining the health of your smile.
It’s important to regularly visit New Minas Dental Centre so that we can help you maintain your overall oral health and work to prevent any potential problems.
Even with a thorough at-home brushing and flossing routine, over time plaque and tartar can still build up on your teeth, and without regular professional cleaning to remove it, this plaque and tartar can eventually lead to cavities and gum disease.
During your dental hygiene appointment, your dental hygienist will remove any plaque and tartar buildup from your teeth. They will also perform a professional flossing, and polish your teeth to finish off the appointment.
Most people should visit the dentist at least twice a year for a professional dental hygiene cleaning. However, depending on your needs, your dentist may recommend you visit us more or less often. Only your dentist can tell you exactly how often you should undergo a professional cleaning.
Most dental cleanings take between 30 minutes and one hour, and are performed by your dental hygienist while you are in a lying in one of our comfortable dental chairs.
Our local hygienists serving the New Minas community are trained to provide you with guidance to help you and your family maintain a healthy smile.
If you have any questions about the hygiene treatment you are receiving, please ask our hygienists for more information.
Regular oral examinations and routine cleanings are just a few of the general care services offered at our practice.
To help keep your teeth and gums healthy, we’re also happy to recommend and provide preventative hygiene services like fluoride treatments, treatments aimed at remedying gum disease, and even professional breath control treatments.
An oral exam may also include x-rays. X-rays are recommended because they help your dentist see potential issues that may be under your gums, or not visible to the naked eye.
It is possible that in spite of your best efforts you may require more aggressive gum therapy.
Like many other ailments gum disease can be quite painless due to its slow progression.
Gum disease does not happen over night and treatment is generally spread out over an extended period of time as the effectiveness of a procedure needs to be assessed before the next step takes place.
Generally, your condition is re-assessed in time and joint decisions are made about your next step.
Dental scaling is the removal of plaque and tartar from your teeth to help your gums regain health. Your dentist or dental hygienist will remove hardened deposits of plaque (tartar) from the teeth, both above and below the gum line, using specialized tools. Dental scaling is the most common non-surgical way to treat gum disease.
Your dentist may apply an anaesthetic to the gums and / or tooth roots prior to the teeth scaling procedure in order to prevent any discomfort. In general teeth scaling causes very little discomfort, although your gums may feel a little tender for a few days following the procedure.
After a thorough periodontal screening and examination, we may choose more aggressive therapies aimed at eliminating or reducing the amounts of bacterial poisons and plaque accumulating below the gum line.
Generally, cleaning and polishing of teeth is done only above the gum-line.
Our hygiene team will work with you to ensure that you have access to the care that best suits your needs.
They will also help you hone your home-care skills so that you can maintain the optimum level of health that you want.
